Purple Hull Pea Jelly is a true Southern original with a story as rich as its color. Made the old-fashioned way from the nutrient-rich hulls (pods) of purple hull peas—not the peas themselves—this homemade jelly has long been known as a “poor man’s grape jelly.” When the hulls are slowly boiled, they produce a deep purple juice that, when combined with sugar and pectin, tastes remarkably like classic Concord grape jelly.
It’s perfect on hot biscuits, cornbread, or pair it some of our all-natural peanut butter for a good ole fashioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich. One taste and you’ll see why this humble, time-honored favorite has been passed down for generations—proof that the best things are often made from what you already have.
